As the Civil War ended, so did slavery, three constitutional amendments
extended to African Americans the same rights enjoyed by white citizens. However,poor enforcement plus people that were culturally entrenched by racism, specially former slave owner in the south, resulted in far
fewer rights for blacks than the Constitution intended.
