The Giver Chapters 1 & 2
Comprehension questions
Foreshadowing
Directions: Below are some examples of foreshadowing in The Giver. For each example, write a specific prediction about the character or plot development that you believe is being foreshadowed. After you finish reading the novel, reread your predictions to see how accurate they were. An example has been done for you.
Ex. Frightened meant that deep, sickening feeling of something terrible about to happen. Frightened was the way he had felt a year ago when an unidentified aircraft had overflown the community twice. . . . He had never seen aircraft so close, for it was against the rules for Pilots to fly over the community. (pg. 1)

-
Explain why the male baby that Father discusses may be released.
-
Identify three reasons why someone may be released.
-

Contrast why December is eventful in Jonas’s society with why December is eventful
in our society.
-
Describe and assess the Ceremony for the Ones. Do you agree or disagree with the
community’s way of handling birthdays? How?
-

arrangement? Do you think it is good or bad for the children? Explain your
response.

What Assignment do you think you would be given?
-
Why do you think that individual birthdays are not celebrated? Why is age not
important after becoming a Twelve?

Decide when and where the novel occurs. Could a society like this one actually be
created? Explain your position.

Prediction: Planes flying over the community will frighten Jonas in the future. They may be
war planes about to attack the community.
1. “But it means,” his mother went on, “that you’ll move into a new group. And each of
your friends will. You’ll no longer be spending your time with your group of Elevens.
After the Ceremony of Twelve, you’ll be with your Assignment group, with those in
training. No more volunteer hours. No more recreation hours. So your friends will
no longer be as close.” (pgs. 17-18)
2.Though he had been reassured by the talk with his parents, he hadn’t the slightest
idea what Assignment the Elders would be selecting for his future, or how he might
feel about it when the day came. (pg. 19)

THE CHASE - SILVANA H.
The Chase
Silvana H.
14/5/13
I woke up slowly, not remembering were I was. While looking at the forest, I started recalling the events from the past week. I remembered the orcs saying, “We’ll kill you Elena!”
I’ve been running from them for the past week. I’m exhausted, but if I stop… I’m dead. Looking at the trees, I noticed that fall was starting. That means it should be around, September.
I should go search for some food. I’m running low on it, since I already ate everything I managed to steal from the orcs. I went into the dense forest, leaving behind the small clearing I was camping in, hidden by the thick shrubs. I walked silently yearning to find some game. I reached the point were I had set my snares. Surprisingly, they had caught two rabbits and one wild turkey. I took the game and quickly hurried back to the clearing.
A shallow stream passed through the clearing. I decided to skin and clean the game there. I also made a small fire. While roasting the wild turkey, I hear a loud THUMP! Afterwards, I hear a few more. After some seconds I realized they were footsteps, and I could only imagine whom they belong to… the orcs.
In the little amount of time I had, I packed everything I managed to. There was no time to put the fire out. I just hoped it wouldn’t cause a forest fire. Finally, I gathered the last of my belongings.
I looked up and saw them emerge from the woods. Their eyes met mine and instantly filled with rage. That’s when I realized I was frozen. I’ve never been this scared since my parents abandoned me eight year ago.
It wasn’t until the orcs were less than ten feet that I snapped out of my shock. I turned on my heel and ran as fast as my legs could carry me.
I looked back and saw the orcs were coming closer and closer. The hatred reflected in their eyes got me distracted and I tripped.
My fingers went numb and almost instantly I knew I had broken something in my right arm. I tried to move my arm, but I couldn’t bare with the pain. Dots started covering my vision and slowly everything stared going black. The next thing I know is consciousness is slipping away from me and I black out.
“We should just kill her already!” one of the impatient orcs says. The others nod in agreement.
The leader booms “No! I want to make sure she repents”
My eyes flutter open and I can’t move. I notice the ropes that are tying me. I fight with the ropes to make me free.
“It’s useless, sweetheart,” someone says once they all notice I’m awake.
I look up and see a very unpleasant sight: the leader of the orcs smirking at me. The victory showed in his face repulses me.
“Go rot in hell!” I spit.
He punches me and I feel my mouth fill with the taste of blood. I spit it and smirk at him to leave the message clear: I’m not defeated and I will never be.
He grabs his sword and I know what his about to do. Yet, my eyes dare him to do it.

Defining Style
Checklist: Elements of Literary Style
Checklist: Elements of Literary Style
Key Aspects in Analyzing an Author's Style
Discuss the following concepts about writing style:
- Analyzing author's style involves understanding the particular way a piece is written.
- Style in writing is not what is said but how it is said.
- Analyzing author's style involves analyzing the writer's unique way of communicating ideas.
- Styles in writing are created deliberately by the author to convey a specific mood or effect.
- Key aspects in styles of writing include:
- sentence length, structure, variation, and position
- the use of sensory details, figurative language, and other literary devices
- the use of sound devices--alliteration, onomatopoeia, rhythm, repetition
- the use of dialogue
- word choice
- tone
- the use of local color
- the use of irony
The style
that an author uses influences how we interpret the facts that are presented.
Wording and phrasing can tell us about emotions in the scene, the setting, and
characters. If you're still not convinced, consider the differences between the
following sentences:
He's passed away.
He's sleeping with the fishes.
He died.
He's gone to meet his Maker.
He kicked the bucket.
The version of that sentence that a writer
chooses tells us a lot about the situation, the speaker, and the person being
spoken to (the audience).

Annabel Lee - Edgar A. Poe
Annabel Lee
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.
I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea;
But we loved with a love that was more than love-
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.
And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.
The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me-
Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.
But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we-
Of many far wiser than we-
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.
For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.
